Chitosan: The food waste that accelerates skin wound healing

Abstract

Chitosan is a natural polymer derived from the deacetylation of chitin, which is commonly obtained from the exoskeletons of crustaceans. This material is notable for its biodegradable and antimicrobial properties, as well as its ability to accelerate skin regeneration in cases of chronic ulcers. Furthermore, its ability to retain moisture and promote healing confers a significant advantage over conventional dressings. Chitosan is also capable of reducing inflammation and increasing the rate of tissue repair, which positions it as both an ecological and medical solution. The use of shrimp exoskeletons allows for the revalorization of waste, providing an application in a biomedical problem, which can have a positive economic impact by promoting the circular economy.
